Activity Title: Choices and Consequences Scenarios Discussion
Suggested Grade/Age Range: Grades 7-8
Activity Objective: The objective of this activity is to explore how our choices and consequences impact us in different real world scenarios relevant for youth
Materials Required: Scenario sheets (one for each small group)
Prep Time: 5 minutes Print out scenario sheets Task Time: 45 minutes
Activity Description: 1. Tell the class that in small groups, they will be discussing different scenarios and the choices we can make in them along with the consequences that follow 2. Divide the class into small groups of 3-4 individuals and give them a scenario each. Tell the groups that they need to read the scenario, discuss the various choices and consequences, and then write these down on the charts provided. They will then need to decide on the best choice amongst the different options written 3. Reconvene as a whole class and have each group present their scenario, choices and consequences, and rationale for their “best choice” 4. Point out that choices and consequences apply across all the different themes relevant for healthy relationships that have been talked about. Emphasize that we need to think through the choices we make the consequences that may follow. When we make a good choice, we feel good about it and about ourselves. Validate that it is okay to make poor choices sometimes because we all do, but it can always be followed by a better choice
Activity Extensions: Rather than writing it down, have each small group perform the scenario, the choices they’ve come up with, and the consequences that follow In their personal journals, have individuals reflect on how choices and consequences inform the other themes in the Youth Healthy Relationships Program
Additional Comments: The theme ‘Choices and Consequences’ can be integrated throughout all the modules in the program as our choices and their consequences inform how we relate to ourselves and to others. The facilitator can choose to draw on this particular module or activity into the conversation in some of the other modules (e.g., Healthy vs. Unhealthy Relationships, Consent, Communication, etc.)
