Suggested Grade/Age Range: Grades 7-8

Activity Objective: The purpose of this activity is to have youth reflect on how gender stereotypes have personally impacted their lives.

Materials Required:

Statements (included in lesson)

Prep Time: n/a

Task Time: 30 minutes 

Activity Description:

 1.       Have the class form a large circle. Tell them that you will be reading a series of statements and after each one, each individual will move into the circle if they feel the statement resonates with them. For example, if the statement really resonates, individuals can choose to move closer to the centre, if it resonates a little they can choose to move in a little, and if it does not resonate at all, they may choose to not move or even move a little outside the circle

2.       Read each statement and give individuals time to move and then instruct them to look around to see where everyone else is. Provide some time and space for individuals who would like to talk about their choice to share. Emphasize that individuals are not obligated to share about how they moved

3.       Statements: Step inside the circle if…

• You have ever experienced being stereotyped because of belonging (or perceived as belonging) to a social group
• You are from a family that has been stereotyped because of belonging (or perceived as belonging) to a social group
• You have felt harmed by a stereotype
• You have felt limited by a stereotype
• You have felt gender stereotypes do not reflect who you are (i.e., “all girls are X” or “all boys are Y”)
• You have experienced harm caused by gender stereotypes in friendships, family relationships, and/or intimate relationships

4.       Complete the activity by having a whole class discussion around:

What can we do to limit the damage that stereotypes can cause?

How can we avoid stereotyping people? 

Activity Extensions:

Have the class create a campaign (e.g., posters and presentations) around challenging stereotypes that they can present to one another and to other classes

Additional Comments:

Review over the concept of stereotypes and gender stereotypes as needed

Because individuals are asked to identify how they have been personally affected by stereotypes/gender stereotypes, it is important to discuss the importance of providing a safe and respectful environment for everyone before the start of the activity
