Suggested Grade/Age Range: Grades 7-8

Activity Objective: The objective of this activity is to explore different scenarios that require consent and give youth practice around how to appropriately seek and give consent.

Materials Required:

 Role Play Scenarios (one for each small group of 3-4 individuals)

FRIES consent process handout for youth to refer to.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Print out and gather all needed materials

Task Time: 45 minutes 

Activity Description:

1.       Tell the class that in small groups of 3-4, they will be exploring different scenarios that require consent. As a group, they are to plan out how to properly seek and give  consent and then perform their skit for the class

2.       Give each small group their scenario and the FRIES handout for reference. Give the groups about 15 minutes to design a skit and practice

3.       Reconvene as a whole class and have each small group present their scenario and then act out their skit

4.       Ask each small group the following questions after they performed their skit:

• Why was getting consent important in your scenario?
• What could happen if you did not ask for consent?
• How did it feel to go through the consent process?
• How does the FRIES model apply to your specific consent scenario?
• What are some obstacles to consent (i.e., things you worried about) in your scenario? How can you work through these?
• Allow the whole class to offer some feedback around both obstacles and strategies around them

5. In closing, emphasize that seeking and giving consent is about establishing healthy boundaries to make sure that each individual are fully agreeing to what is happening. As the scenarios demonstrate, this can be in a variety of situations and relationships

Activity Extensions:

• Have youth perform the skits twice, once where consent is not sought and a negative consequence is demonstrated and once where the full consent process is carried out
• Have youth perform the skits twice whereby consent is given or not given

Additional Comments:

• Make sure to refer back to the FRIES model of consent and encourage the youth to refer to this as they plan out their skits
• Review over the obstacles of consent covered in Activity 1, especially around awkwardness and pressure that may have made the consent process difficult

●        Note: The model is discussed around the consent process for sexual activity, which is important to acknowledge, but the conversation can be generalized to consenting in other activities or behaviours – the foundation is around teaching youth to establish health boundaries when relating to different individuals in all types of relationships.
